Wieland caught fire off Singapore. He dutifully returned to the island of Samar to replace his lost collection. On this repeat expedition, he fortuitously collected a specimen of the great Philippine eagle <em>(Pithecophaga jefferyi)<\/em>, which was later named after his father and sponsor, Jeffrey Whitehead. Wieland, the traditional symbolism of Ark as life vessel, fabulous birds of Bagobo Myths, and Bagobo-Tagabawa blacksmithing practices, Mica Cabildo conceptualized an installation for birds, which was to be \u201can inside-out aviary: a massive structure in the form of an open birdcage, or the frame of a stranded Ark, or the skeletal remains of a giant magical bird of prey, or a combination of all, waiting to be colonized by moss, lichens, fungi and bryophytes, providing shelter for birds, wildlife and even humans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/mica-cabildo.com\/whiteheads-ark\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/pallet-scene-02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-156\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/mica-cabildo.com\/whiteheads-ark\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/pallet-scene-03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-157\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"155\" src=\"https:\/\/mica-cabildo.com\/whiteheads-ark\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/pallet-scene-01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-155\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Whitehead\u2019s Ark VR, the installation takes the form of a rusted shipwreck from which Whitehead\u2019s birds have broken free.
